Starting in fall/winter 2026, the SHSAT is officially moving to a digital format. Students will take the test on computers provided right at the testing location by the NYC Department of Education.
Along with going digital, the SHSAT is introducing a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) model. All this really means is that the test actively responds to the student. As students progress through the exam, the system adjusts the difficulty of the upcoming questions based on how they answered the previous ones. Because the test tailors itself to each individual student in real-time, no two test-takers in the same room will see the exact same set of questions.
We know that a major shift like this can feel daunting. When the rules of a big test change, it's completely normal for students (and parents!) to feel a little extra anxiety.
The best way to replace that test-day nervousness with quiet confidence is simply knowing what to expect. At NYCG Prep, our students practice on specialized Computer Adaptive Practice Modules that mirror the adaptive format they'll see on test day. By taking the mystery out of the new system, we help students get comfortable with the rhythm of the digital test. And by removing the fear of the unknown, we help instill confidence and mastery, and help pave the way for SHSAT and SAT success.
